Q: My son is a floor tiler who wants to work in surface mining, particularly in Western Australia. What advice can you offer him? Is it possible to find work in the mines based on the qualifications he already has?A: The fact that your son has a trade background can be handy, although it is obviously not a trade directly related to the mining industry.A quick search on the internet using mining as a key search word will provide you with many mining-related training and employment companies around Australia. You should also check out the website jobsearch.gov.au, where you can find jobs listed by region, industry and occupation Australia-wide. The website also provides contact details for every Job Services Australia (JSA) employment provider. A few phone calls or emails to JSA providers in mining regions of WA will significantly support your son's research into surface mining jobs.Q: I have a small business that I would like to expand by direct marketing my products through the media and contact with potential customers. I'm talking with related government organisations but are there other organisations worth speaking to?A: Two organisations you might find useful are the Australian Direct Marketing Association (adma.com.au) and the Australasian Promotional Products Association (appa.com.au). The usefulness comes from not only the information they may be able to provide but also the benefit of discovering other links, leads and contacts via research with them.Q: I'm in year 11 and looking for a job in retail during the summer holidays. What can I do to make sure I get a job?A: Get busy right now, because you may have left it a bit late already. Write a brief introductory letter outlining what you are looking for and attach a one-page CV to the letter.Make up a list of at least 10 businesses at which you would like to work and visit them as soon as possible. Dress like you are ready to start work, leave a copy of the letter with the manager and put on your best smile.Q: I am interested in possible careers with the Australian Stock Exchange. Where can I go to find some information?A: The Australian Stock Exchange, asx.com.au, has a link on its home page that has plenty of information about career opportunities. Information at the ASX career page asx.com.au/about/careers/ includes the history of the ASX, diversity in careers there, learning and development and job opportunities.Email your questions to doctorwork@mycareer.com.au.
