Hints and Tips - Ordering Your Tiles

When you order your tiles, there are a few things you need to know and take into consideration.

      Wastage

When ordering your tiles you need to make sure you order extra to allow for wastage (such as slight colour variations that occur between batches and breaks or cracks). We recommend you ordering an extra 10% - 20% depending on the size of tile and the pattern in which they will be laid. You may also wish to order extra tiles to replace any damages in the future.

      Shade Variation
Slight colour variations in tiles between batches are unfortunate but inevitable. To avoid these variations as much as possible, it’s best that you buy all of your tiles at the same time. If you’re buying in large quantities, you should also make sure that the tiles you are given are from the same batch.

      Durability Ratings
Tiles are rated (1 - 5) depending on their durability and the type and amount of foot traffic they will be exposed to. It’s important that your tiles meet your practical needs. Your tiler should discuss this with you.

Most tiles are rated: - 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 for the following uses:

      Class 1
Tiles suited to floors exposed to soft footwear or bare feet and free from harsh dirt that may scratch.
Recommended use: internal bathrooms and bedrooms.

      Class 2
Tiles suited to floors exposed to soft – normal foot footwear traffic where very light and infrequent dirt scratches may occur.
Recommended use: internal living rooms with light – moderate foot traffic.

      Class 3
Tiles suited to floors exposed to normal footwear and traffic
Recommended use: internal rooms and walkways, including kitchens and hallways.

      Class 4
Tiles suited to floors exposed to large amounts of foot traffic where scratching may sometimes occur.
Recommended use: internal and external rooms, including restaurants.

      Class 5
Tiles suited to floors exposed to heavy footwear and traffic. High resistance to cleaning products and staining agents.
Recommended use: internal and external spaces such as shopping centres.

      Check List

When you’ve received your tiles, we recommend the following checks are carried out:

      • Check the correct type of tile has been delivered
      • Check the correct quantities have been delivered
      • Check for any damages
      • Check that all batch numbers match

If you’ve chosen Natural Stone tiles, take extra care handling them to avoid marking, staining or chipping the edges. And finally, ensure a dry, safe place is provided for storage of all your tiles.
