Floor Tiles
Floor tiles are made from strong materials because they can be subject to heavy amounts of foot traffic.
If floor tiles are laid down in the kitchen, it is best to purchase floor tiles that are more resistant to water, salt, or oil stains. If they are laid in the bathroom they may only need to be resistant to water, while in rooms that require only low maintenance and receive less traffic, such as bedrooms, they can be less durable types.
Floor tiles can be made from ceramic, terracotta, porcelain, marble, quartz and mosaic. Limestone is a popular material for floor tiles although they need to be sealed because limestone is porous.
It's important to know that floor tiles come with different durability ratings, ranked from one to five with one as the least durable and five as the most.
A floor tile ranked one is best suited for areas that receive little traffic such as bedrooms where the user is bare-foot.
A rating two floor tile can be used in residential areas as long as heavy footwear is not used, and a rating three floor tile can be used in kitchens and hallways - areas that receive more traffic.
Floor tiles with a rating four are able to withstand great use, while floor tiles with a ranking of five are the strongest and are suited to commercial areas where traffic is excessive.
