Floor Tilers
Floor tilers will tile any floor surface - from your kitchen to your bedroom, living room or bathroom.
The range of tasks a floor tiler performs are:
- Measuring the floor surface to be tiled
- Cleaning and preparing the surface to be tiled
- Laying the tiles out using the correct adhesives
- Cutting tiles using tile-cutting tools around edges and permanent objects
- Making sure that tiles are evenly placed and correctly spaced
- Applying grout and removing and cleaning away excess grout
- Applying waterproofing systems
Floor tilers work with tiles made from a wide range of materials. Some of the materials that tiles are made from include:
- limestone (popular tiles for covering floors however they need to be sealed as limestone can be porous)
- ceramic (made from clay and can be glazed or unglazed and come in many different finishes in a range of sizes)
- terracotta (unglazed tiles)
- porcelain (these tiles are fired at extremely high temperatures and very strong. They come in both glazed and matte finishes and are used both indoors and outdoors)
- mosaic (small tiles made from stone, glass or ceramic, set into a base to create patterns. Popular in bathrooms)
- marble and granite (very durable and low maintenance. Polished marble and granite tiles become slippery if wet)
- quartz (a very durable material and available in a wide range of colours).
Floor tiles also come with durability ratings, ranked from one to five with one being the weakest and five being the strongest. Floor tilers will be able to assess what durability-level floor tile is best for you.
Rating one floor tiles are best used in areas that receive less traffic where the user is likely to be bare-foot or wearing slippers.
Rating two floor tiles can be used in a residential area as long as heavy footwear is not work and the area is not heavily used.
Floor tiles with a rating three can be used in areas that receive more traffic such as kitchens and corridors.
Rating four floor tiles can withstand great use and can be used in commonly used areas of the home such as entrances and common walkways.
Rating five floor tiles are the strongest and are most suited to commercial floors that receive excessive amounts of traffic.
